We all deserve positive wellbeing, and it’s important in every aspect of life. If you experience low mental wellbeing over a long time, then you’re more likely to develop a mental health illness. Mental wellbeing is dynamic. It can change every day, every moment, and every year.
Having good mental wellbeing means you should be able to:
- Feel relatively confident in yourself, and have positive self-esteem
- Express your emotions
- Build and maintain good relationships with others
- Feel engaged with the world around you
- Live and work productively
- Cope with the stresses of daily life
- Adapt and manage times of change and uncertainty
We’re not all perfect, and we don’t all feel everything stated above. Just because you have positive wellbeing, doesn’t mean you won’t have some low wellbeing at times.
This week, I was sent on a Mental Health First-Aid (MHFA) course, to help support those who are suffering from mental health problems. The MHFA session made me realise, even more so than I already did, how important it is to have positive wellbeing, and how we should all be making every effort to make sure we have it.
As a company, we’ve done so much already in 2018 to help offer this to our staff. The Employee Assistance Programme was introduced early this year, which offers a 24/7 helpline for employees and immediate family to confidentially speak to a qualified advisor, a new introduction of the Health Cash Plan, where employees can claim cashback on physical wellbeing, and signing the Time to Change pledge – which shows that we’re committed to changing the way we think and act about mental health. However, as a company, there’s only so much we can do.
Today we joined over 700 employers by signing the @TimetoChange pledge.
Mental health has always been there, and it’s spoken about more in recent years – companies are addressing it, but what can you do to help yourself?
There are key lifestyle choices which you can make to improve or maintain your mental health. These were first summed up in 2008 by the New Economics Foundation. They are known as the Five Ways to Wellbeing.
FIVE WAYS TO WELLBEING
Build strong relationships with the people around you. This could be family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Invest time in them and improve your support network.
Try improving your exercise regime. Exercising is known to make you feel good, so find an activity that you enjoy!
Be aware of the world around you and what you’re feeling. Mindfulness is a great exercise for relaxing and focusing on touch and smells.
Try something new or re-discover an old interest! You’ll build your confidence by learning new things as it gives a sense of achievement.
Give something back. Do something nice for a friend or stranger, join a community group and link your happiness with the wider community. This creates connections with the people around you.

Positive wellbeing lowers the likelihood of developing a mental health illness. If you’re feeling down, and you’re worried about your wellbeing, then talk to somebody that you trust and contact your GP.
